Golf teams compete

The boys and girls golf team have been dealing with the cold spring, but were able to compete in two SEISC meets last week. On Tuesday, April 8, we hosted Columbus at Kalona Golf Club with mixed results. The IMS boys were defeated with a four-person team score of 182-249. Tanner Leyden led IMS with a 48, while his cousin, Ethan Leyden was medalist for Columbus with a 41. The girls were narrowly defeated by Columbus 242-238. Breana Stout was co-medalist with Kortney Orr from Columbus with a 53.

Second year head coach Steve Nelson had to say, “With the little practice we’ve been able to get in, we were not too surprised by the results. We had some good holes and hit plenty of good shots, but early season inconsistency really plagued us. It was great seeing Breana finish her round off strong with a birdie and to get the co-medalist honors.”

On Thursday, April 10, a smaller team went to Indian Hills Golf & Country Club to compete with host Wapello and Danville. The boys finished third with a 235 behind Danville(219) and Wapello(208).

Unfortunately, the girls only had three of our eight girls around to compete so IMS did not have a team score. Jess Bender was meet medalist for the girls with a 55. Wapello won the meet with a 250 team score ahead of Danville’s 273.

Coach Nelson said, “The boys improved their team score by 14 shots in two days. That is great improvement already. On the girls side, it is great to see some good individual performances. This was a meet we could have won with our full team, but we’ll have another chance to play at Indian Hills and more chances for wins as we move deeper into the season. We have two weeks off until out next meet and our team is wanting to get some good practice time in. We should be more ready to go when we tee it off again.”
