The Iowa Mennonite boys cross country team placed eighth out of nine full teams at its own Early Bird cross country meet Tuesday.  City High won the boys team total with 23 points.  The meet is held on the school’s campus and in the neighboring timber. It was a beautiful afternoon for the sixteen team meet.  Junior Kirby Shetler led the way for the boys team in the varsity race with a twenty-second place in 18:49.  First time cross country participants, Payton Miller and Noah Bruns, were fifty-fifth and sixtieth in the race.  Kobi Russom was sixty-fifth in 25:11, over two minutes faster than his time at this meet last year.  Rex Yoder was the team’s fifth runner placing sixty-seventh in his first Early Bird meet.  Jim Wang ran well in his first race in the United States placing seventy-fourth.  Bennett Luedtke of Muscatine won the individual title for the second year in a row in 16:24.78.  Seventy-five runners finished the boys varsity race.

Iowa Mennonite did not field a full team in the girls varsity race.  Juniors Renee Buckwalter and Michaela Gingerich both competed in their third Early Bird race of their careers.  Renee was the top finisher placing twenty-eighth in 19:04.  Michaela was over forty seconds faster than her time at this meet last year.  She placed sixty-third in a time of 22:10 on the four kilometer course.  Muscatine shocked many observers of the girls race by moving from a fifth place team finish at this meet last year to soundly defeating perennial favorite City High 17-71.  City High held out four of its top eight runners for this meet but Muscatine would have been hard to beat even if City High had run it’s top squad.  Freshman Brina Kraft of Muscatine was the individual winner of the girls race in 15:54.97, a new course record.  Erin Danielson of City High had held the previous course record of 16:01.73 set in 2010.

IMS competes next at Fairfield Thursday September 12.
