IMS defeats Highland at home

Enrique Sanchez

The IMS soccer team hosted Highland in its first home game of the season picking up a tough 6-1 victory in difficult weather conditions.

With the wind at their backs to open the game, IMS put immediate pressure on theHighlanddefense but struggled to find the back of the net. After

several close attempts, Peyton Thompson took a ball into the far side of the box and crossed it into the middle where Nicholas Yoder turned the ball into the goal. Less than a minute later Yoder dished out the assist, this time sending a ball across the box to Enrique Sanchez who nailed it by the goalie.

Highland tightened their defense and launched several dangerous counter attacks but the back line of Justin Boller, Cody Miller, Jameson Lammer and Kirby Shetler stymied each attempt. After goalie Joel Shetler slipped on the wet field, Boller bravely cleared a ball from the face of the goal, before he was sent flying by an onrushing forward. In the closing minutes of the half, Kirby Shetler intercepted a pass then made run up the line before putting a perfect pass into the path of Dillon Bender who sent the ball into the corner of the net and IMS led 3-0 at the half.

The second half opened with falling temperatures and a cold, icy wind. Reggie Hostetler was just heating up as he intercepted a pass outside the box and drove the ball into the net.  After aHighlandgoal halfway through the period Hostetler struck again as the corner kick he took sailed into the goal for what is called an “olimpico.” Hostetler closed the scoring as he intercepted aHighlandgoal kick and beat the goalie to finish the scoring and claim the hat trick.

IMS moves to 2-1 for the season and 2-0 in the conference race. IMS next travels to Holy Trinity next Tuesday.
