The Iowa Mennonite soccer team opened conference play at Wapello picking up a 13-0 win. After getting used to the small field IMS put Wapello under intense pressure, finally breaking into the scoring column when Spencer Schrock lofted a crossing ball into the box where Justin Boller headed the ball by the goalie. Just minutes later, Schrock sent another cross into the face of the goal, where it spun into the net for Schrock’s first goal of the year.
After the scoring breakthrough, IMS scored four more times before the half ended. Dillon Bender notched two goals along with three assists while Enrique Sanchez added another goal and assist. Kobi Russom playing in his first varsity match picked up his first goal.
The scoring in the second half opened with a Wapello “own goal,” as Lane Schrock sent a ball across the box, only to have it cleared into the net by a Wapello defender. Reggie Hostetler was next on the scoring list, scoring twice while Justin Boller added another. Freshman Eli Gingerich tallied his first varsity goal and minute’s later senior defender Cody Miller scored the first varsity goal of his career. Nikhil Thacker, a senior playing in his first varsity game, finished the scoring on a beautiful assist from Gingerich. Kirby Shetler added two assists while Peyton Thompson and Miguel Sanchez each added one.
IMS moves to 1-1 on the season. IMS returns to action Tuesday hosting Highland.
