Cody Miller

Senior Cody Miller placed fourth at the state qualifier meet in Ottumwa Monday night qualifying for the state meet this Saturday.  The top ten individuals and top three teams qualify to move on to the state meet held in Fort Dodge.  Iowa Mennonite placed ninth as a team.  There were twenty-six schools represented at the meet.  Here’s how the race went

for Miller.  He started a little faster than usual and found himself in twelfth place a half mile into the race.  By the mile mark he was in seventh.  He stayed in the seventh position for most of the remainder of the race until his final kick moved him into the fourth position.  His final time on the 4.39 kilometer course was 15:48.  Sophomore Kirby missed the final qualifying position by two places but the gap between tenth and twelfth was a full twenty seconds.  Shetler finished with a time of 18:29.  Jacob Valov was sixty-first in 18:29.  Jacob Schmieder placed seventy-sixth in 19:05.  Kobi Russom rounded out the scoring by placing one hundred forth in 22:33.  Rex Yoder and Richard Deming also represented the maroon and black finishing in one hundred seventh and one hundred eleventh respectively.  Ben Friederichs of Durant won the individual title in 15:18.  Highland won the team title.

Renee Buckwalter, Camila Segar, Summer Schrock, Riley Schmieder

Sophomores Renee Buckwalter and Riley Schmieder led the Iowa Mennonite girls cross country team to an eighth place finish at the 1A state qualifier meet Monday in Ottumwa.  Buckwalter did not hold back as the race started covering her first mile in 6:33.  Schmieder, on the other hand, started more conservatively and gained a little ground on Buckwalter in the final mile and a half of the race.  Buckwalter finished in eighteenth place with a time of 16:40and Schmieder was twenty-fourth in 16:58.  Senior Camila Segar was the team’s third finisher placing fifty-eighth in 19:16.  This was Camila’s final high school cross country race.  “I have really appreciated the maturity and leadership Camila has brought to the team the past two years.  She will be missed,” commented Coach Marty Gingerich. Vesna Zunic of Montenegro came through with a great race placing ninetieth with a time of 22:54.  This was also Vesna’s final cross country race in the United States.  Summer Schrock was the team’s fifth and final runner Monday night.  She finished in ninety-fifth place with a time of 24:09.  Freshman Gwynne Wright of Pekin led her team to a team title by winning the race with a time of 14:49.

Cody Miller

Cody will be competing at the state meet this Saturday October 27.  The meet will be held at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course north of Fort Dodge and begins at 11:00 a.m. Cody will compete in the boys 1A race at 2:30 p.m.  Cody has worked hard to get to this point and would appreciate your support.  Come Saturday and cheer like crazy for him!
