IMS defeated Columbus in five games Thursday night at Columbus. Game scores were 25-14, 23-25, 25-23, 24-26, 15-11. “I believe it was our sheer determination and outstanding hustle that gave us this win. As a whole, we had too many hitting errors and it was our defense and aggressive serving that would get us back in every game,” Coach Cindy Miller said. Columbus had some tough servers as well that gave IMS trouble throughout the match. Whenever a team serves in the 91%-95% range, that team will probably earn the win. Kristin Davis served a perfect 15/15 serving game. Even though it felt like more during the match, the team only missed eight serves all night but earned 10 aces.
Casey Perez ran the court well earning 35 assists. Olivia Yutzy and Laura Hochstetler combined attempted 114 attacks tonight and earned 28 kills. Not far behind was Anya Slabaugh with eight kills of her own. She was busy at the net all night getting her hands in the way of Columbus hitters. Coach Miller commented, “Last year we struggled to finish strong and would let games like tonight slip away. Our experience of the past was evident which helped us earn the win.”
IMS’ conference record is 6-2 and overall record is 15-11. IMS will play Pekin at home on Tuesday, October 9. We will honor our seniors before the varsity match.
