The weather was beautiful for the Iowa Mennonite Invitational cross country meet held at the Wellman golf course Monday night. Seventeen teams were present with thirteen fielding full boys teams. The Iowa Mennonite men placed ninth. Vinton-Shellsburg won the team title with 27 points. Every member of the IMS boys team ran faster than they did on this course two weeks ago. Cody Miller ran a strong race finishing in 17:54 for thirteenth place just one slot behind conference rival Ben Polley of Wapello. Kirby Shetler was twenty-eighth place in 18:29. Kirby was able to finish just ahead of Cady Wyatt and Zeb Schwartz of Mid-Prairie in a sprint at the finish. Jacob Valov placed fifty-ninth in a new personal record time of 20:22. Jacob Schmieder was seventy-ninth in 22:01, twenty-five seconds faster than two weeks ago. Richard Deming took another two minutes off his personal record finishing in 23:49 for eighty-fifth place. Kobi Russom took a full minute off his
previous personal best time. His new PR is 25:10. Rex Yoder completed the course in 25:46. “I am very pleased with the boy’s performances tonight. They have been training hard. They are learning how to push themselves in competition. And it shows,” commented Coach Marty Gingerich. Wyatt Lyons of Vinton-Shellsburg was the individual titlist finishing in 16:58.

3A powerhouses Solon and Williamsburg dominated a relatively strong field in the girl’s race. Fifth ranked Solon won the team title with 33 points ahead of seventh ranked Williamsburg’s 76 points. The Iowa Mennonite women placed eleventh in the twelve team field. Sophomore Renee Buckwalter responded well to the strong competition. She finished in twenty-fourth place with a time of 17:17, thirty-six seconds faster than two weeks ago on this course. On her first day of being sixteen, Riley Schmieder had a strong finish slipping ahead of conference rival Aryka Parsons of Wapello for thirty-first place. Riley’s time of17:39 is forty-four seconds faster than last time on this course. Camila Segar had a great race finishing the course in 20:54, a new season best. This was also the first time Camila finished faster than her time at the same meet last year. Alvard Mamikonyan took nearly two minutes off her previous best time established just four days ago. Her new personal record is 22:10. She was eighty-fifth. Summer Schrock was one place behind in eighty-sixth place. Lauren Benzing of Solon won the varsity race for the third year in a row. Her time this year was 14:49, thirty-eight seconds ahead of second place.
The Iowa Mennonite Cross Country teams have their next competition at the Southeast Iowa Super Conference meet hosted by Wapello at Indian Hills golf course on Thursday.
