Senior Cody Miller led the Iowa Mennonite boys cross country team Thursday at the Bud Williams Invitational hosted by City High on the University of Iowa course. Cody’s time of 17:52 is a new personal best and the first time he has been under 18 minutes on a 5k course. Kirby Shetler placed thirty-fourth in 18:37. Jacob Valov was forty-eighth in 20:41. Jacob Schmieder finished the race in 22:25 for fiftieth place. Rex Yoder made his debut on the team this year placing fifty-second with a time of 25:49 to round out the scoring. Kobi Russom was fifty-third in 26:17, over two minutes faster than last year on this course. Price Brook of City High won the race in 16:01.

The Iowa Mennonite girls cross country team only had four athletes compete in the Bud Williams invitational Thursday night but three of the four came away with season best times. Renee Buckwalter finished twenty-fifth in 17:21, her best time this season. Riley Schmieder was two places behind in 17:28. Riley had a very strong finish passing two runners at the end of the race to lower her personal best by fifty-five seconds. Alvard Mamikonyan also had a great race establishing a new personal record and finishing as the team’s third runner for the first time. Summer Schrock was not far behind placing forty-third in 24:14. Gwynne Wright of Pekin won the race in 14:27.
Monday October 1st the cross country teams host the Iowa Mennonite Invitational at the Wellman golf course. The meet features eighteen boys and eighteen girls 1A, 2A and 3A teams including some of the best runners and teams in the state in these classes. The meet starts at 4:00 p.m. with the inaugural junior high race followed by four high school races. Come support your favorite runners.
