Renee Buckwalter, Riley Schmieder

Sophomores Renee Buckwalter and Riley Schmieder worked as a team to tackle the challenging English Valleys cross country course at Knoll Ridge Country Club in North English.  It seems like you are always going either up or down on this course and some of the hills are quite steep.  Schmieder had the advantage on the down hills and Buckwalter on the up hills and on the level.  The finish is at the end of a long gradual incline.  Buckwalter had the advantage placing seventeenth while Schmieder placed eighteenth in the identical time of 19:27.  Summer Schrock and Alvard Mamikonyan  had their own seesaw battle going on towards the back of the pack.  Summer

Alvard Mamikonyan, Summer Schrock

was ahead at the mile mark, Alvard at the two mile mark and Summer again at the finish with three seconds separating the pair.  Iowa Mennonite only had four girls in the varsity race so were not able to have a team score.  Team scores are determined by adding the places of your first five finishers.  The low score wins.  Maddie Hinsley of Clear Creek-Amana won the girls varsity race in 16:55.
