Sophomore Rex Yoder took part in showing swine at the Washington County Fair this summer. Yoder bought the pigs in April and raised them for four months at his family’s farm near Kalona. At the Washington Fair, Rex received a purple ribbon for individual lightweight barrow. To go along with the purple, he achieved a blue ribbon in the heavyweight barrow and gilt classes. Rex brought three pigs to fair, two Hampshire and one Chester White. “I liked working with my hogs. I also enjoyed raising them all the way up to the fair,” Yoder commented on his everyday chores of raising his hogs. Rex Yoder plans on showing again next year.

Senior Justin Boller showed swine at the Johnson County Fair this past summer. Justin bought seven hogs in March from a local hog producer. Boller raised the seven hogs at his grandparents farm near Kalona. Boller commented, “Everyday I had the responsibility to chore my hogs. There was no off day.” At the Johnson county fair, Boller showed two hogs, both of which were enlisted in the Derby division. He won Grand Champion in both Rate-Of-Gain and Lean Gain. Boller also had the largest pig in Johnson County, weighing in at 353 pounds. He finished third place in derby pair. When asked about his experience Boller said, “Raising hogs is something I love to do. It feels great to win at fair. All the hard work and hours put in paid off.” Justin Boller plans on showing hogs again next year.
