Brent Brenneman

Junior Brent Brenneman showcased his Black Angus cattle at the Johnson County Fair this year. Brenneman raised his cows for a little over a year. The cow’s diets consisted mainly of corn, oats and hay. Brent raised the cows in a shed on his farm near Wellman. At the Johnson County fair, he received a purple ribbon in Rate-Of-Gain. One of his cows averaged 2.54 pounds gained per day and the other 2.64 pounds per day. To go with the purple ribbon, Brent achieved 3rd place in the cross bred division. Brenneman went on to say what he likes about the fair experience. “Raising my calves and seeing them grow is rewarding. Showing is the best part about fair.”

Brent plans on showing cattle again next year at the Johnson county fair.

Michael Hershberger

Sophomore Michael Hershberger showed Dairy Cattle at this year’s Johnson County Fair. Hershberger received the cows in April. Over the last four months, he has gone to his grandpa’s farm everyday on Highway 1 to feed and groom each cow. At the fair, Michael won Grand Champion Holstein along with 1st place purple ribbons in Junior Calf and Junior Yearling. His other dairy cow finished 2nd place in the two-year old dairy cow division. When asked what his favorite part about raising his cattle, Michael said, “I like to show my cattle in the ring at fair. The judge even complimented me on how professional the top line of my Holstein looked.”
