The IMS boys and girls golf started off their season with a perfect day for a golf meet in Kalona against Columbus on Monday night. Despite the great weather the IMS boys and girls couldn’t keep up with the low scores put in by Columbus. On the boys side Zac Howell from Columbus was the medalist with a round of 37. Zac had a lot of support from his fellow teammates as Tanner Travis shot a 41, Eli Sents carded a 42 and Ethan Leyden shot a 44 for a team score of 164. The IMS boys were led by sophomore Tanner Leyden who shot a 52. Jordan Miller shot a 64 for his first ever meet. Randy Ropp shot a 69 and Grant Schlabaugh and Richard Deming both shot a 75 in their high school golf debut.
On the girl’s side things weren’t much different. Laura Wittman led the way for Columbus with a 54, Delaney Howell shot a 57, Christine Miller had a 65, and Hannah Parker carded a 66 for a team score of 242. The IMS girls were led by senior Jess Miller who shot a 71, Breana Stout and Mischa De Jesus both carded 80, and Kaycee Miller shot an 88 for a team score of 319.
With an inexperienced group of golfers coach Ryan Miller was pleased with the progress that has been made. Coach Miller said, “Many of the golfers have never played before and to see them come out and give a great effort was exciting to see. Now all of the golfers have a number that they can try and improve on.” Both the boys and girls teams have no time to rest as they face Waco on Tuesday night at the Kalona Golf Course.
