IMS got a big home win Saturday, defeating Iowa City Regina 79-62 in a Coaches vs Cancer event in Hillcrest Union. IMS trailed 11-8 with three minutes to play in the first quarter before erupting for a 9-0 run to finish the period up 17-11. A Chance Miller make from near half-court over a pair of Regina defenders at the horn gave IMS a 37-29 lead going into intermission.
Regina cut it to 41-37 by the four-minute mark of the third period. IMS responded and stretched it back to 53-42 by the end of the quarter. IMS held the Regals off, making 10-10 from the line in the fourth quarter.
IMS’ balanced attack saw Chance Miller net 21 points and nine assists, and Johnny Lackender record 15 points and 10 rebounds. Peyton Thompson scored 15 points on five treys and had three assists, and Brian Hagedorn tallied 14 points. Cameron Gingerich came through with 12 points, three steals, and three assists. Dallas Nye had four rebounds and three assists to go with two points.
Coach Dwight Gingerich said “this was a good win over a solid team and a step forward for our team. The balance was terrific. We had everyone really contribute and it true team effort.”
The non-conference win raises IMS’ mark to 14-4, and Regina drops to 13-4.
Following the game, several individuals and families were recognized, as a way of putting a face on the disease of cancer that affects all of us. The crowd was invited to respond with donations. $2023 was raised, with all of the money going to the American Cancer Society. A big thank you to all for the tremendous generosity!
