IMS traveled to Winfeld Tuesday for the season opener and came away with a 58-37 victory over the Wolves. IMS trailed 6-2 early before a Reggie Hostetler trey made it 6-5. Winfield-Mt. Uniion led 16-12 after one period, and held a 21-20 lead with just over two minutes to play in the first half before a 7-2 flurry gave IMS the 27-23 lead at intermission.
IMS came out of intermission a sharper team, and outscored the Wolves 19-6 to lead 46-28 heading into the final period. A 10-1 IMS run over the next four minutes put the game out of reach for W-MU.
Senior Brian Hagedorn led the balanced IMS attack with 12 points, while junior Peyton Thompson and sophomore Dallas Nye scored eight points apiece. Junior Cameron Gingerich, senior Johnny Lackender, and junior Chance Miller each tallied seven points, sophomore Reggie Hostetler had five, and junior Justin Boller and senior Randy Ropp each scored two points. Thompson had three assists and three steals, and Nye, Lackender, and Miller pulled down four rebounds.
Coach Dwight Gingerich said “it was good to see us get the jitters out and settle down and play much better the second half. We got better with our pressure and execution and I thought we played unselfishly and at the same time more aggressively the second half.”
IMS next plays Friday as conference favorite Pekin comes to Hillcrest Union.
