IMS came up short in a thriller Tuesday night, losing to Waco 58-56 in a game that could have gone either way. IMS got off to a tough start when freshman Riley Schmieder went down with a knee injury on the opening play of the game. Even without Schmieder IMS jumped out to an early 16-9 lead before Waco went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 16-16 with two minutes gone by in the second period. IMS led most of the first half and went into halftime with a 28-24 lead.
The lead seesawed back and forth throughout the second half as both teams struggled to take control. Waco led 55-50 with two minutes to go but IMS wouldn’t go down easily. Led by the defensive pressure of Olivia Yutzy and Kristin Davis, IMS was able to force a couple turnovers and turned them into baskets. The biggest of the night came off a Davis steal and lay-up, tying the game at 56 with ten seconds to play. IMS was called for a foul on the following inbound play, putting Waco at the line where they calmly knocked down a pair to take a 58-56 lead. IMS’ final possession resulted in a Yutzy jumper that fell short as time expired.”I was pleased with our effort level throughout the game. We competed for thirty two minutes and can be proud of that. There is no doubt we missed Riley tonight but am happy with the way everyone else stepped up,” said Coach Aaron Gingerich.
Sophomore Olivia Yutzy led IMS with 19 points, including four triples, to go along with five rebounds, and five steals. Fellow sophomore guard Kristin Davis had 16 points, including four threes, to go along with six assists, six rebounds and three steals. Amber Davis finished with ten points, Laura Hochstetler had seven including two threes, Laura Yoder had two and Celia Hostetler rounded out the scoring with a basket.
