Don Bosco 4

IMS 1

Duane Banks Field, home of the Hawkeyes

The IMS Varsity Baseball team traveled to Iowa City Tuesday night to play a single game against the 3rd ranked Dons from Don Bosco, Gilbertville at the beautiful facilities of Duane Banks Field, home of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes baseball team.

In the bottom half of the first, Don Bosco put pressure on the IMS defense and starting pitcher Cameron Gingerich as they led off the game with back-to-back singles.  Cameron held tough though, striking out the next hitter.  With the infield in again, a sharply hit ground ball got through the legs of Jackson Brokaw to allow the first runs of the ballgame to score.  Cameron got the next hitter to line out to him, to which he promptly doubled-off the runner at first for an inning ending double-play.

The score would remain 2-0 throughout the next four innings as both pitchers scattered hits and base runners but were able to get the clutch outs without giving up any runs.  It was a sure battle on the mound of who would flinch next.  The IMS offense finally got the spark it needed in the top half of the sixth, when lead off hitter Marshall Schrock skirted a single through the left side of the infield. After a fly out and strikeout by Bosco’s ace, junior outfielder Levi Schrock took a  1-0 fastball to right center field, doubling and scoring Schrock to cut the lead in half at 2-1.  The threat would end there in the inning, as Bosco was able to retire the final out in the inning.  In the bottom half of the inning, Don Bosco would add two more runs, one of them unearned, to extend their lead to 4-1.  IMS was able to get the lead off hitter on base with a Malachi Bontrager single but a double-play and strikeout ended the chances for IMS as they fall to Don Bosco 4-1 on a beautiful night for baseball.

Jackson Brokaw had two hits, including a double.  Malachi Bontrager also had two hits in the game.  Cameron Gingerich struck out six, walked two, and scattered six hits in six innings of work on the mound for IMS.  That moves IMS overall record to 12-11 and next will play at home on Thursday in a JV/V double-header against 2A ranked Van Buren.
