IMS 2 Columbus Junction 3

The IMS softball team did everything they could on Monday night to pick up their tenth win of the season but it just wasn’t quite enough. Great defense and pitching were the name of the game as you could tell after the first two innings. With Columbus only mustering three hits on the night and IMS four it was clear that it would be a game of scratching and clawing for every run.
In the first inning both teams were able to get a runner to third but neither were able to plate the run leaving them stranded. The same was true in the second inning for Columbus but again the IMS defense came through. Columbus struck in the third inning with two outs. An IMS error allowed Columbus to get a base runner than a couple timely hits allowed Columbus to put up three runs. IMS continued to battle as they hit the ball hard all night and Columbus continued to make the plays they needed to. IMS was able to break the scoring drought in the bottom half of the sixth inning when Gretchen Geyer singled to right then promptly stole second and third and reached home on a throwing error making the game 1-3. A six pitch top of the seventh allowed IMS to continue to gain momentum going into the bottom of the seventh. The first two batters reached base for IMS putting on the tying run. With one out Mo Brenneman laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases moving the tying run into scoring position. A walk by Gretchen Geyer made the game 2-3 with two outs. Columbus was able to make a nice play to end the game on a ground ball to the third baseman sealing the win for Columbus.
” This was a great game to be a part of as everyone on both sides were making plays. I thought we did a great job of putting the ball in play. They were just in the right spots at the right times. I think we had five or six balls that if they would have been a foot one way or the other they don’t make the play and we score a few more runs then we did. Sometimes that is how the game goes. Both teams were focused and playing well,” complimented Head Coach Chris Nachtigall.
IMS was led by Gretchen Geyer 1-2 with 2 SB and 1 run; Laura Hochstetler 1-3; Mo Brenneman 1-4; Olivia Yutzy 1-4; Pitching Laura Hochstetler 7 innings 3 hits, 1 BB, 7 K’s (Breaks the single season strike out record for IMS).
IMS is 9-13 (8-8 SEISC) and will play tonight at Louisa Muscatine.
